The STORYtaPKPKtata ta tata ta ta1. Coral CitytaPKPKtata ta tata ta ta$ I let the air out my buoyancy vest and slowly sink. The entire world above--the dry world--rises out of view above my mask. I descend into an underwater three-dimensional wonderland. No human could create what lies beneath me: an ordered explosion of colors, shapes, movement, and mystery. taPKPKtata ta tata ta ta I descend ten meters and find myself in the midst of a vast coral garden. The coral sculptures are brilliantly shaped and molded. I see coral in the shape of massive purple brains, tangled yellow antlers, blossoming orange flowers, and giant crimson fans. taPKPKtata ta !tata ta ta]For millions of years these tiny coral creatures have built their calcium housings on the old houses of their deceased predecessors. Without engineers or computers, they manage to create phenomenal apartments of architectural genius. Each tiny organism humbly contributes to the greater cause, never seeing the complete work of which it is a part. taPKPKtata ta#tata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta %tata ta taSample: "The author compares the coral structures to apartments and then alludes to how the tiny creatures work together to create great things."taPKPK,ta ta ta 'tata ta ta Wf3̙f3f3f3̙f3f3̙f3̙̙f3̙f3fffff3ffff̙fff3fffffff3ff333f333333̙3f3333333f3333f3̙f3f3ffffff3f3333f333f3ffffff3f3333f333f3ff̙ffff3f33̙33f333̙f3ffffffffff3fff3f3f3f3ff33f3ffffff3fff3f3f3ff3f33f33333333f333333333f3333ffffff3f3333f333f3"""DDDUUUwwwx7y 灈 & 4 %;m?(*$EwF 7 {=6 5i E&"p*E6H> :la": %B GD l2 W ,B3=?25##% { m!# ;@hIP GmK"F0.'/"4".J ?=l2"d22j2 i?'"ZSPs>:P8B C 0 9"DB #"_ !)**2Q0Q* . 5 O 2c %L * & .d6 % ( lg 1 %88~% 1@JO #, 422 =% #T?dv H إ2 &&77' > 82YU܁5ܥ ,\)uo$ ?2@$#|=+ x A`24 22 #>Bt %E"7 A"zj% @ ~ o/ ?3 0R#e?Vq2 BCbB22!V&"@?Ac߾I2V#Q;~ll>"I~e@TR c,n~b;R߾sUܥ . FanstaPKPKtata ta +tata ta taTI drift past several delicately-laced magenta and purple sea fans, swaying in the current. They bend without breaking in the undulating flow of wave motion and tidal currents, the forces that bring oxygen and plankton to the coral garden. I sway back and forth with the sea fans as if it were all part of a brilliantly choreographed dance.taPKPKtata ta -tata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta /tata ta tataPKPKtata ta 1tata ta ta 3. AnemoniestaPKPKtata ta 3tata ta taNA bright lime-green anemone catches my eye. It is nine inches across and looks like a fat sunflower with a bellybutton in the middle. A little orange fish, attracted to the colors like a bee to a flower, touches a petal-like tentacle and sticks to it. Just as the anemone begins to close around it, the fish struggles and gets away. taPKPKtata ta 5tata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta 7tata ta tataPKPKtata ta 9tata ta ta 4. SchoolstaPKPKHtata ta ;tata ta taA large school of small and skinny silver fish swims overhead. They are rolling and spinning and turning and fluttering. When a large barracuda plows into the scene, they huddle together and their school forms a solid looking mass in the shape of one huge fish. The barracuda does not attack, fooled by the school. The silver fish scurry away into the blue beyond. The barracuda eyes me and moves on, perhaps disappointed that I won"t fit in its mouth. taPKPKtata ta =tata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta ?tata ta tataPKPKtata ta Atata ta ta 5. SymbiosistaPKPK`tata taCtata ta taIn a wide crevice I see a peculiar sight. A large bulldog-looking brown fish, the length of my arm, has its big mean mouth wide open. A six-inch neon blue fish, called a wrasse, is darting around inside the big fish"s mouth. "Watch out! He's gonna eat you!" I try to warn the small fish by mental telepathy. But it continues and the bulldog fish doesn't eat the little wrasse. Finally I realize that the wrasse is cleaning bacteria from the big fish's mouth, much like a dentist might do. The fee? The wrasse gets to eat whatever little organisms it finds. He also has a big bully friend to scare off any wrasse-eaters. Of course, the bulldog fish could have a fresh wrasse meal any time he wants. But who can refuse a free dentist? taPKPKtata ta Etata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta Gtata ta tataPKPKtata ta Itata ta ta 6. SharkstaPKPKtata ta Ktata ta taThen I see the most fascinating and mysterious of all sea creatures: the shark. It glides along like a hovercraft, gently swaying its tail back and forth, in no hurry at all. It is a one-meter black-tipped reef shark that inhabits tropical reefs. I am not afraid, because it is one of the 396 of 400 species of sharks that does not attack humans. It hasn't changed much in millions of years; it hasn't had to. It is a prehistoric work of art. As I clumsily follow the little stealth glider, I feel sorry for it and many other shark species that are feared and killed by humans without provocation. (Even the sharks that do attack humans, do so by mistake.) taPKPKtata ta Mtata ta ta Metaphor, Symbolism or Analogy:taPKPKtata ta Otata ta tataPKPKtata ta Qtata ta ta 7. SilencetaPKPKtata ta Stata ta taCMy air is running out and it is time to ascend. Before I leave, I stop to listen. Silence. No honking, no jets, no neighbor's music, no phones ringing, and no TV advertisements. Just a peaceful and orderly society that started millions of years ago and will hopefully continue to teach us lessons a million years from now.taPKPK-tata ta Utata ta taThe dry world descends into view and I breathe real air. I bob on the surface and let the images of the reef and its lessons sink in to my brain as I make my way to land.taPKPKtata ta Wtata ta ta"V.
